Calahonda is the largest residential development between Fuengirola and Marbella which has grown to such an extent that it almost qualifies as a town. Situated only 15 minutes from Marbella centre (off the A-7 and the AP-7 Motorway) and approximately 35 kilometres from Málaga and its international airport, Calahonda officially belongs to Mijas whereas Cabopino to Marbella municipality.
THE PEOPLE
Calahonda, with its leafy tree-lined avenues, is the base for a large centre of population. This area also attracts lots of tourists with its vacation clubs, commercial centres, beaches and many restaurants. The majority of residents in the area are foreigners, mostly British and German.
GETTING AROUND
Motorists will find easy parking and there are bus stops on the main route between Marbella and Fuengirola servicing Calahonda. Within the urbanisation, the trencito is available to travel between different points including the shopping centres.
WHAT TO DO
Belonging to Marbella municipity, nearby to Calahonda is a charming port called Cabopino which has yachting berths available to rent or buy. Surrounded by apartments, bars and restaurants that all overlook the little marina, Cabopino offers a buzzing nightlife.
AT THE BEACH
Cabopino is also home to one of the most attractive beaches on the coast. The calm sea and vigilant lifeguard make this coast family friendly. The beach has a very relaxed atmosphere and is equipped with sunbeds, parasols, and many chiringuitos. Sand dunes are characteristic of the area immediately west of Cabopino and are also very popular among the area’s nudists, so be warned! Alongside the marina one can find many facilities offering fun activities. These include banana boats, jet skis, inflatable rings, dolphin trips, para-gliding, etc.
HISTORY
Calahonda was founded in 1966 after several small urbanised areas were built for tourists. The beach and rural lifestyle brought fame to Calahonda and, as a result, a natural expansion took place, financed by tourists and foreign residents.
SHOPPING
With everything at walking distance, this coastal town is the perfect place for shopping and walking around the small boutiques. Calahonda’s street market is every Wednesday and Friday at the Calypso centre. El Zoco commercial centre is also worth a visit with its supermarkets, shops, restaurants and more. Avenida de España, commonly known as ‘the strip’ has a concentration of restaurants and bars.
SPORTS
A short walk from Cabopino, crossing over the motorway, one can find the area’s golf course, Cabopino Golf. In Calahonda there is also a mini, 9 hole golf course, La Siesta, and a well equipped Tennis Club, Club del Sol, featuring several tennis courts, squash & gym.
